Copenhagen,
the capital city of Denmark is surrounded by water and the sea is part
of its identity. It is built on 2 major islands, Sjaelland and Amager,
and is connected by a vast array of bridges. Copenhagen has no
distinct district divisions. Businesses, residences, and recreational
areas are interspersed throughout the city.
Tivoli Gardens
Copenhagen's most well-known attraction. Located next to the main
train station, featuring a stage, theater, restaurants, and live
music. Flower exhibits bring beautiful color and fill swan occupied
ponds.
Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek (New Carlsberg Museum) -
Around a beautiful indoor garden, works by Degas, Gauguin, Rodin and
other impressionists, as well as Egyptian, Roman, Greek and Italian
art, French sculpture.
National Museum
A 18th century royal residence, restored, houses collections depicting
Danish cultural history. The largest collection of stone age tools
along with Egyptian, Greek and Roman antiquities. The children's area
has a Viking ship, Middle Age castles, and other touchable exhibits.
Christianborg Palace
Once the royal residence, now in use for governmental functions. Where
the queen officially receives guests, Parliament House and Supreme
Court. A fascinating maze of ruins is available for viewing beneath
the building(s).
Royal Theatre
Kongelige Teatre (Danish Royal Theater). The country's venue for
music, opera, ballet and theater.
Nyhavn
"New Harbor", a 300 year old neighborhood meant to attract commerce in
the city center. An 18th century seaport atmosphere pervades with
restaurants, boutiques, antique stores are new additions. Hans
Christian Anderson's home for awhile.
Amalienbourg Palace
Housing the royals since 1784. Consisting of 4 Rococo-style buildings.
A museum is on-site.
Gefion Springvandet (Fountain)
and "The Little Mermaid" -
See Hans Christian Anderson's beloved "Little Mermaid" immortalized in
statue. The goddess Gefion is also honored in statue form. The myth
promised Gefion as much of Sweden as she could carve in a night and
that she created the island of Sjaelland (one of the 2 major islands
of Copenhagen).
Rosenborg Castle
Meant as a King's summer castle, the only castle that is not state's
property but passed from monarchy to monarchy. Dutch
Renaissance-style, with ballrooms, reception chambers and regal halls.
Displayed objects give visitor's a glimpse into royal lifestyle: gem
studded tables, gold crusted clocks, a pearl encrusted saddle, royal
jewels, tableware and artwork.
