BIG ISLAND OF HAWAII

Larger than all the other Hawaiian islands combined, The Big Island of Hawaii has 11 of the world's 13 climates. Here you can find stunning white, green, and black sand beaches, dramatic cliffs, volcanic parks, exotic rivers, breath taking water falls, vast plains, even cactus-laden deserts. Twin peaks of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, both over 13,000 feet high, tower over this island. It is divided by ski slopes. Actually, Mauna Kea is only the top of a submerged mountain. It is 32,000 feet from sea floor to sky. It could be called the tallest mountain in the world, higher than Mount Everest by several thousand feet. "The Big Island" is the youngest in Hawaii, at a million years old and still growing with constant eruptions and lava flows. It is one of the few places on Earth where you can still see an active volcano. The Volcanoes National Park is home to Kilauea, a fiery volcano that has been occasionally erupting over the last decade. Spend a delightful holiday in Hilo and take a tour of this flower capital of the world that is lined with black and white sand beaches. Kona Coast, world famous for coffee plantations, offers spectacular views of the ocean from its powdery beaches and sharp cliffs.

Volcano National Park
Established in 1916, it occupies an area of 358 sq mi (927 sq km) and includes the active volcanoes Mauna Loa and Kilauea, 25 mi (40 km) apart. Other highlights are Kau Desert, an area of lava formations near Kilauea, and a tree-fern forest that receives nearly 100 in. (2,500 mm) of annual rainfall.

Mauna Loa
Located in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, it is the world's largest mountain in cubic content. It rises to 13,678 ft (4,169 m) and has a dome 75 mi (120 km) long and 64 mi (103 km) wide. Mokuaweoweo, its pit crater, has an area of nearly 4 sq mi(10 sq km) and a depth of 500-600 ft (150-180 m). It has averaged one eruption every 3 1/2 years since 1832. Many of its eruptions are confined within Mokuaweoweo; others are from fissures and vents. Its lava flows occupy more than 2,000 sq mi (5,120 sq km) of the island. See also Kilauea.

Kilauea
The world's largest active volcanic crater, it is about 3 mi (5 km) long, 2 mi (3.2 km) wide, and 500 ft (150 m) deep, and is at an altitude of 4,090 ft (1.250 m). In its floor is the vent known as Halemaumau Pit, legendary home of the fire goddess Pele. Its frequent eruptions are usually contained within the vent as a boiling lake of lava, but occasionally the lava escapes; since 1983 a series of eruptions produced lava that reached the sea 30 mi (48 km) away.
