and surfing are inseparable to many people.
After all, it was the sport of the ancient Hawaiians and is even
more popular today. Maui's abundant coastline offers big waves for
veteran surfers and spots suitable for beginners.
Some surfing companies boast that anyone can be riding the surf in
just one lesson and that, indeed, was the case when my son Jake
tried it the first time. This, however, was not my experience. I had
a great time, but I was still "wave illiterate" after my first
attempt.
Maui has great surfing companies, some of which have instructors who
have been on the professional surfing tour circuit.
Windsurfing
Windsurfing is probably the fastest growing of all the "action
sports" in Hawaii.
The constant and consistent "trade winds" and the total availability
to ocean in every direction make windsurfing and its newest cousin
"kite-surfing" an absolute natural for Hawaii. In fact, one stretch
of beach on Maui known as Hookipa is considered to be the "Mecca"
for windsurfing on the planet.
Each year there are incredible competitions held there which bring
in participants from the world over. This area is without a doubt a
bit too "radical" for the inexperienced but we also have wonderful
coastlines that are perfect for those who are just learning. |

Kiteboard Maui Sailing Center -
Learn to Fly the Ocean

Kiteboarding is a new sport, thrilling to watch, but potentially
dangerous and frustrating for beginners who do not carefully learn the
basics before heading out on the water. As the sport progresses, lessons
and teaching styles progress also. Instead of years learning on your
own, the Kiteboard Maui approach will give you the skills to enter the
water safely and develop rapidly. Instructors have undergone full safety
training and utilizes the teaching methods of International Kiteboarding
Organization IKO, Hawaii Kiteboarding Association HAK, the Aloha Spirit
Equipment provided: helmets, life vests, and a full range of kites and
training boards, color course book, certification card, continuing
on-line support.
