It
swims to Maui from Alaska, spends the whole winter here, then swims
back - and doesn't eat the whole time! Its lungs are the size of
a Volkswagen Beetle. Its babies, born here on Maui, grow at a
rate of 100 pounds a day. It's the Humpback Whale!
Narration and interpretation of whale movements are provided on Maui
whale watching boats. You'll find yourself wanting to know more about
these fascinating creatures.
A
two-hour whale watching trip may not be enough to satisfy your
curiosity about these marine mammals. You may want to go on a couple
of different trips during your holidays.
Many types of boats offer whale watching. Large ones provide stability
on the ocean. Some have upper decks for greater viewing capacity.
Rafts, or zodiacs, are more adventurous, more intimate and give more
of a 'whale-eye' view of the surroundings.
Whale watching by kayak is the ultimate in awesome.
Morning is usually the best time for whale watching on Maui. The ocean
is flat, making the whales easier to spot.
Zodiac rafts are extremely exciting but not recommended for pregnant
women or those with bad backs.
Children love whale watching! The price for kids is usually half of
the adult fare. Larger boats provide them with room to run around.
Whales are a "must see"
The
waters surrounding Maui have been declared a sanctuary for the
Humpback, so whale sightings are common all season long. Strict rules
govern the conduct of vessels engaged in whale watching on Maui to
allow the animals
freedom from harassment. This has provided a peaceful environment for
our winter visitors and has been a contributing factor in the
continued comeback of this species that was once on the road to
extinction
Humpbacks put on a spectacular show.
They travel in pods and are usually spotted by the sound and sight of
their tremendous 'blow', their great exhalation when they reach the
surface. They'll remain on the surface ten or fifteen minutes,
playing, slapping their flukes, waving their tails and launching their
massive bodies high in the air in a "breach." Soon, they flip their
tails and "sound," diving deep into the ocean depths.
