SUNSET BEACH PARKSunset Beach Park

59-104 Kamehameha Highway

North Shore, Oahu

The North Shore has always been famous for surfing, and Sunset Beach is no exception.  Sunset Beach Park is one of the better surfing sites on Oahu. During the winter, fifteen to twenty foot waves are not uncommon - there are also large summer swells. When still the ocean is great for swimming and snorkeling. Be very careful of the "Sunset Rip" - newcomers to this beach should check out where this and other hazards are with the beach's lifeguards. (It runs off the inshore reef about midway between Val's Reef and "Kammie Land.")

Sunset Beach is one of the longest sand beaches in Oahu, running two miles in length and 200-300 feet wide. In the summer when the ocean is calm, this beach has crystal clear water and beautiful white sand. The area is great for swimming and snorkeling. There is also wonderful tide pools great for collecting shells and observing the wonders of nature. During the winter months this beach is one of the best for surfing with waves often between fifteen and twenty feet high making it perfect for yearly international surfing competitions.

Ehukai Beach Park - no one can remember its name, but everyone remembers the famous surf break in Hawaii.  This beautiful tubed surfing break (The Banzai Pipeline) got its name in the late 1950 when a famous surf cinematographer shouted out “Banzai” while narrating the film “Surf Surfari” as a surfer dropped in on a particularly vicious wave.

This tubed surfing break is famous among surfers and most people come here just to watch the best (and not so best) surfers try to tackle the huge surf, especially in the winter. Swimming is okay when the surf is calm and just plain dangerous when the surf is up, so take care.

When it's "cranking," the surf, besides being the most spectacular in the world, can also be the most dangerous. The waves are steep and powerful and can come up within seconds. They also break furiously on the shallow reef - the cause of many broken bones and lacerations. This beach has some of the best sandbar type surf on Oahu. During calmer periods, usually during the spring and summer, swimming is good - otherwise it's very hazardous.

KEWA`ENA BEACH

Between Waimea Bay and Ehukai

North Shore, Oahu

This relatively unknown and underdeveloped beach park overlooks the famous surf spots of "Off the Wall" aka "Kodak Reef" to the North and "Log Cabins" to the South.  Be careful in the Fall and Winter when the surf can be large and treacherous. This is a nice beach for swimming and snorkeling when it's calm.

"WAIMEA" BAY BEACH PARKWaimea Bay Beach

     "Reddish" Bay

61-031 Kamehameha Highway

North Shore, Oahu

Another famous surfing beach, Waimea Bay Beach Park, is home of the largest, dangerous, most spectacular, ride-able surf in the world. When the surf's up, often to thirty plus feet, even just the inshore break can be big - sometimes as high as twelve feet. There's also a strong rip current running out at the center of the bay that can be treacherous.

During the summer the waters are calm and great for swimming. But during the winter - watch out - even the most experienced of water persons and surfers think twice before entering the waters or even going near the shore break when the swells are large, fast, and deadly. Experienced, best surfers in the world ask the lifeguards about conditions, and you should, too!
