"ALA MOANA" BEACH PARK"ALA MOANA" BEACH PARK

     "The Path To The Sea"

1201 Ala Moana Boulevard

South Shore, Honolulu

Ala Moana Beach Park is located near downtown Honolulu and across from the Ala Moana Shopping Center. This is a beautiful 76-acre park located along the south shore just west of the famous Waikiki beach area. This beach is noted for its excellent swimming, surfing, and body boarding. There are also lovely shaded picnic facilities and grassy areas perfect for family outings.

This is generally a safe beach at which to swim. Parents or guardians should keep careful watch over their children.  Tidal changes and the winds can create strong currents, which have caused several near drowning and deaths by drowning among children who apparently have panicked when caught in them. Flotation devices and swimming boards sometimes give a false sense of security to children; avoid using them if at all possible.

The same caution should be exercised by weak swimmers - the waters in the beach's channel area may look calm but there can be strong undercurrents, swift tidal changes - near the reef area - and deceptive distances to what may look like safe reef areas or rocks. The reef area beyond the channel area is only for the more experienced - the area has sharp coral and jagged rocks, swift currents and wave action.

On the "outside," there are areas designated for surfers and body boarders, however the drop point occurs rapidly. Check out the conditions with the lifeguards on duty before you go "outside." Absolutely avoid swimming in the boat channels on either side of the beach park. They are very busy and, thus, can become very dangerous.

South Shore, Waikiki

Perhaps the most famous beach in the world, Waikiki beach is what most people think of when they think of Hawaii. In reality, it is comprised of five smaller beaches that run along the warm southern shore, lined by the grandest hotels on Oahu. Here you will find a multitude of tourists looking for a bit of space to lie out and soak up the rays. As for the beach itself, it is somewhat small and the waves are usually small.

Waikiki BeachWaikiki Beach is usually crowded but is a very nice area where one can swim, canoe, surf and snorkel. The areas towards Diamond Head are near to the expansive picnic and recreational facilities, including those of Kapiolani Park.

Caution should be taken when using personal flotation devices, especially to newcomers.  Be aware of runaway surfboards – they can be dangerous.

"HANAUMA" BAY NATURE PARKHanauma Bay Nature Park

   The "Curved" or "Handwrestling" Bay

7455 Kalaniana`ole Highway

South Shore, east of Hawaii Kai

Hanauma Bay Nature Park is one of the more popular recreational swimming, snorkeling and picnicking areas on O`ahu. The bay itself is legally designated as a State Underwater Park and Conservation District. The bay is the result of the ocean's breaching and incursion into two volcano craters. This most beautiful of places is ideal - if you are a new SCUBA diver or snorkeler; and just for swimming.

Avoid walking on the rocky ledges where waves are breaking, they can be very dangerous. Rocks become slippery and are sharp, abrasive lava stone. Lava is very porous and it crumbles easily. Don't ever go into the wet rocky zone. The ocean is unpredictable and has been known to wash people away.

Located within the sunken crater of an extinct volcano, Hanauma Bay is  a protected nature reserve. There is an admission charge of $3/person, and $2 for parking.  Hanauma Bay Nature Park closes down all day on Tuesdays; all other days it's open from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The park fills up quickly; therefore, it is recommended that you get there by 10 a.m. Once there, you have to walk down a steep road (you can take a bus back up for $0.50) till you reach the beach, a small strip of sand. But you don't go to Hanauma Bay for the beach, you go for the snorkeling. Because of its extensive coral reefs and protected status, there are colorful, tropical fish everywhere. The water is calm and shallow, and clear.

SANDY BEACH PARKSandy Beach

South Shore, east of Hawaii Kai

At Sandy Beach, there is a beautiful sandy beach, large grassy fields, and potent winds, which allows for some of the best kite flying on the island. But lurking off shore are some of the meanest waves in all of Hawaii. The waves aren't large (4-6 feet in the summer), but they come in hard and fast. This makes Sandy Beach “the spot” for Boogie Boarding and Body surfing.

This beach is a great gathering place for teenagers.  However, it is a great all-around family beach park, too. Newcomers to the Islands should be sure to ask a lifeguard about the day's conditions. Parents and/or Sandy Beachguardians should continuously watch their children - especially when the ocean waters are "big." Weak swimmers should also take extra care and caution.

An interesting problem has arisen because of the popularity of this beach with experienced shorebreak bodysurfers. They make it look so easy to bodysurf that persons unfamiliar with the local conditions try to imitate them . . . and often get hurt. Please be extra careful . . don't spoil your enjoyment (or your life) at this truly epic beach.

When the surf is calm, this is a superb beach for swimming. However, when the surf is up, this beach can be treacherous due to the shorebreak and rip tide currents.
