"MAKAHA" BEACH PARK "Makaha" Beach Park

     "Fierce" or "Savage"

84-369 Farrington Highway

West Shore, Oahu

Makaha Beach Park is named for the area that surrounds it. A legendary band of bandits living deep in the valley frightened the area many years ago. Today Makaha's claim to fame is its international renown as a superb site for surfboarding.

During the winter, this beach's surf does indeed exhibit "fierce" conditions. Wave heights often average fifteen feet and can peak as high as thirty feet or more. In addition to this, definitely not being a time even for novice surf and body boarders, it certainly isn't a time for swimmers to be in the ocean at all. The waters are otherwise safe except when there is high surf. Strong backwashes are created and the shore break and resultant undertow becomes very dangerous. During high surf time there are many surfboarders. In addition to the surfers, be sure to watch out for their runaway surfboards.

This beach park is in the driest areas of Oahu. Be sure you and any keiki (children) who might be with you drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration. Be sun safe and sensible: Wear a broad spectrum sun block, tanning lotion, or cream with a sun protective factor of SPF 15+ and reapply it every two hours. Don't forget your sunglasses and to wear a hat with a wide brim, too!  Be safe and have fun.

POKA`I BAY BEACH PARKPokai Bay Beach Park

85-037 Waianae Valley Road

West Shore, South of Makaha

This beach has some of the best swimming on the West shore. It does have some boat traffic, but the waves are generally calm year round due to its protective coral reef.  Be sure to watch out especially for heavy boat traffic in the immediate vicinity (and occasional canoes from the nearby halau). Otherwise, this is a generally fine ocean recreation area for families and persons to spend a most enjoyable time.

Poka`i Bay and the immediate area nearby was named after a legendary Hawaiian high chief. Poka`i allegedly transported the first coconut palm tree in the great migration from Kahiki to Hawai`i. This lovely ocean area and beach is well protected, even during the winter high surf. Its coral reef slopes very gradually, not sudden like other reefs in the area. It is an excellent swimming area year round. Its sandy beach is stable even during the times of heavy seasonal beach erosion in the fall and winter.

This beach park is also in the one of the driest areas of Oahu. Be sure you and any keiki (children) who might be with you drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration. Be sun safe and sensible: Wear a broad spectrum sun block, tanning lotion, or cream with a sun protective factor of SPF 15+ and reapply it every two hours. "NANAKULI" BEACH PARKNanakuli Beach Park

     "To Look At The Knee"

86-269 Farrington Highway

West Shore, South of Makaha

This beach park is in an area where it had been customary to name places after a body part - Nanakuli literally means, "to look at the knee." This is an interesting beach and offers diversified recreational activities.

Principal ocean activities are swimming, snorkeling, SCUBA and skin diving. Swimming is generally safe during the summer months, but becomes very dangerous during winter high surf season. Snorkelers and divers should watch out for winter's strong currents and turbulence.

"MA`ILI" BEACH PARKMaili Beach Park

    "Little Pebbles" Beach Park

87-021 Farrington Highway

West Shore, South of Makaha

This beach is named for the numerous pebbles (ili'ili) found nearby. In ancient times these stones had many uses as fish sinkers, game pieces, and musical instruments. Today this beach is a popular site for surfers. There is good swimming during the summer months when the surf is calm. The sandy beach is large at this time but erodes away during the winter.

This is a popular site for surfers. Swimmers get most enjoyment during the summer months when the surf isn't so big. It's during the summer that the sandy beach is usually widest and it erodes away during the fall and winter. The coral reef drops off suddenly, so ask the lifeguards at the beach where the best swimming areas are and where hazards can be avoided. There's a boat jetty nearby so be sure to watch out for the boat traffic.

The west side of the island is the driest areas of Oahu. Be sure you and any keiki (children) who might be with you drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration. Be sun safe and sensible: Wear a broad spectrum sun block, tanning lotion, or cream with a sun protective factor of SPF 15+ and reapply it every two hours.
